Background to Packaging Legislation:

  • The UK creates ten million tonnes of packaging waste every year.
  • Presently only one third recycled.
  • January 1998, saw the introduction of the Packaging Obligation Legislation. This is the European Directive which sets the recovery and recycling targets to be achieved.

What Does This Mean?

  • Business that handle over fifty tonnes of (packaging) and has a turnover of over two million pounds and over, are obligated.
  • Proof Of Recovery Note (P.R.N.)
  • Relevant Packaging material (recovery), cardboard, paper, plastic, glass, metal, wood.
  • Companies who do not register are liable for heavy fines for non-compliance.
